Welcome to Yamatani Restaurant.
Our claim to fame? Mammoth’s first Japanese and Sushi Restaurant, and one of the longest running under one ownership. In the summer of 1980, a couple of friends were sitting around talking about how much they enjoyed the Eastern Sierra and all it had to offer and lacked. Robbie Tani, 3rd generation Japanese-American, felt that Mammoth Lakes was ready for a Japanese Restaurant. On a whim, and a prayer, he signed a lease, quit his engineering job in L.A., gathered up his mother’s recipes and brother Alvin and opened Shogun Restaurant in November 1980.
We serve traditional Japanese cuisine and, some say, the best sushi. We serve only sushi grade (high quality) fish from all over the world from the same fish markets that L.A. restaurants use. We thank you for your patronage all these years and, if this is your first experience, we hope you will return for many years to come. Our goal is to give you a memorable dining experience, with good food and excellent service in a relaxing atmosphere. Please let us know how we are doing via Facebook and other social media.
